There are few things better than when an MLB team puts out the perfect lineup. Not only is lineup construction one of the most important things in baseball, but it’s something that makes baseball such a unique sport.
Imagine a world where the Lakers had to announce beforehand which possessions LeBron James was going to shoot on.
But the pre-planned nature of linesup also allows for fans to have a good three hours before a game to cheer (or scream) in response to that day’s lineup.
Today’s Guardians’ lineup should have plenty of fans in Northeast Ohio doing the former.
After putting together a year of disappointing lineups last year, the Guardians have finally put out a near-perfect lineup, thanks in large part to the presence of top prospect Travis Bazzana, who was officially called up from Triple-A earlier today.
The lineup is as follows:
- LF Steven Kwan
- DH Chase DeLauter
- 3B José Ramírez
- 1B Kyle Manzardo
- CF Daniel Schneemann
- RF Angel Martínez
- 2B Travis Bazzana
- C Bo Naylor
- SS Brayan Rocchio
That’ll play.
Travis Bazzana is hitting seventh in his MLB debut
While it wouldn’t be a surprise if Bazzana ends up spending most of his Guardians career hitting higher up in the lineup, the No. 7 spot in the order is a good, soft landing spot for him in his MLB debut.
He also helps provide the Guardians with another weapon in their never-ending platoon war since he adds to a lineup that features six left-handed hitters and three switch-hitters against Tampa Bay starter Nick Martinez (who is right-handed).
The team’s defensive positioning is also top-notch thanks to Kwan being in left, Schneemann being in center field and Martínez being in right.
Although Kwan has bounced around between center field and left field this season, he’s won four straight Gold Gloves in left. Meanwhile Schneemann is arguably the Guardians’ best center fielder and one of the most important hitters in the lineup while Martínez has been better in right field after working in center last season.
There really aren’t a ton of surprises in the infield, though it’ll be fun to see Bazzana and Rocchio together in the middle of the infield.
While it would be fun to see them link up for a double play, it would be even more fun to see Rocchio drive Bazzana in and continue his incredible run of production from the bottom of the lineup.
At this time last year it seemed like Bazzana and DeLauter were a million miles away from Progressive Field. Now they’re both mainstays in the middle of the Guardians’ lineup as they work to keep pace in the American League Central.
It may seem hard to believe, but a new day is dawning.
