Coming into the 2026 MLB season, the Cleveland Guardians had one of the best minor league systems in baseball thanks to a system led by Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter and Parker Messick.

But all three of them officially graduated from the minor league system earlier this year, which meant the top spot in the Guardians’ system was open for the taking.

And that spot was taken by none other than the 21-year-old Ralphy Velazquez, who is in the midst of a fantastic minor league season and is quickly working his way into the Guardians’ short-term future.

Ralphy Velazquez keeps climbing prospect rankings

Along with being the Guardians’ top prospect, Velazquez also rose 15 spots in MLB Pipeline’s top-100 list to become the No. 39 prospect in baseball.

Velazquez entered play earlier today with a .298/.387/.492 slashline with nine home runs and 39 RBI across 66 games in Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus. He opened the season at Akron but was quickly promoted to Triple-A after a fantastic month to the season.

Not only has Velazquez been able to hold his own in Triple-A despite being five years younger than most players in the league, he’s also begun to play in the outfield in earnest, which could help jump-start his big league career.

He’s appeared in nine games in left field this season and has recorded just one error in 66 innings. While those stats don’t jump off the page, they’re not dissimilar to the stats Cooper Ingle put up in the outfield before being promoted.

While Velazquez may not have the same kind of name recognition as Bazzana or Messick, he’s quickly becoming a household name across Northeast Ohio.

He had previously been mired in a bit of a cold stretch, but broke it over the weekend with a 422-foot home run in Columbus’ win over Omaha on Sunday.

The rest of the Guardians’ top-5 is made up of Angel Genao, Cooper Ingle (who just made his MLB debut), Khal Stephen and Braylon Doughty.

Again, not as much name recognition as some top-5’s of the past, but still an impactful group of players.

Ingle already earned that first big league call-up, and made a positive impression with his bases loaded single against the Mariners over the weekend. He seems like a mainstay on the roster, so his stay in the top-5 shouldn’t be long.

The same could be said for Stephen, albeit for a completely different reason since Stephen is set to undergo elbow surgery that could keep him out until 2028.

Even if that injury won’t completely ruin his MLB future, it’s a big roadblock that should lead to him getting leapfrogged in the prospect rankings.

Even if having Velazquez at the top of the Guardians’ prospect ranking is a bit more of a long game than when Bazzana was, he’s still a prospect worth being excited about.
