Last season the Cleveland Guardians needed help in their outfield. In fact, they needed so much help that they decided to call Chase DeLauter up from the minors so he could make his MLB debut.

Now DeLauter’s front and center in an outfield battle that has a chance to be the top story for the rest of spring training for the Guardians.

On Friday, The Athletic’s Eno Sarris published a new story highlighting some of the biggest position battles in MLB this year and, surprise, surprise, the Guardians’ outfield battle was right in the middle of the list.

The Guardians’ outfield picture consists of plenty of intriguing young prospects

The Guardians' outfield “battle” is a bit different than a traditional battle in that almost all of the options involved are young players. While Nolan Jones and Stuart Fairchild are part of it, the biggest names who are competing against each other for a majority of play time are rookies Chase DeLauter, George Valera and CJ Kayfus.

If DeLauter’s healthy (a very big if), he stands out as the top option to get a majority of the playing time given his legit tower power

But injuries have been a huge part of his career since the Guardians drafted him in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, but he has as much talent as anyone in Guardians’ system/

Valera also made his MLB debut late last season after having the start of his career impacted by injuries (so much so that the Guardians designated him for assignment at the end of last season), but he showcased his power last season and has been swinging a hot bat this spring.

He’s another left-handed option in the outfield (as is DeLauter), which is why someone like Fairchild or Johnathan Rodríguez could sneak onto the Opening Day roster so they could provide some balance.

Kayfus may hold the key to the outfield picture given how interesting his profile is compared to his peers. He can also play first base, but his path to get playing time there got more complicated after the Guardians signed Rhys Hoskins to a minor league deal.

Kayfus is also a lefty, but he looked the part during his two-month stint on the Guardians’ roster last season.

He could be the odd man out after camp ends however, since he’s the rawest outfielder of all the players included in the list and also has a minor league option remaining.

Jones is coming off a disastrous return to Cleveland, but the Guardians tendered him a $2 million contract.

That makes it seem like the Guardians are thinking of him as a part of their 2026 picture, but that would be a tough sell to the fanbase if it comes at the expense of one of the young players on the roster.

The Guardians have done a good job giving all their outfield options playing time this offseason, but they're going to need to make a decision eventually.

Valera, DeLauter and the rest of the Guaridans' young options have done a good job making it a tough decision.
