On Saturday, Stephen Vogt finally got a chance to write Travis Bazzana’s name atop the Cleveland Guardians’ lineup card.
It’s hard to believe that’s going to change any time soon.
Bazzana’s stayed in Cleveland’s leadoff spot in the two games since he made his debut there against the Phillies, which is a tangible example of how much the Guardians’ front office likes him.
And while that statement may seem silly since Cleveland’s front office picked him with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Guardians entered the season with Steven Kwan entrenched at the top of their lineup.
But the Guardians finally moved Kwan out of the leadoff spot earlier this month and wasted little time moving Bazzana up to the top spot in the lineup.
While Bazzana always seemed like the heir apparent for the Guardians’ leadoff spot thanks to his quick hands, great eye and control of the strike zone, no one imagined it would come this early.
Travis Bazzana seems to be entrenched as the Guardians’ leadoff hitter
After Vogt moved Bazzana to the leadoff spot, he made it seem like Bazzana’s move was a single-game move by saying “(I) don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow.”
And even if Vogt and the Guardians may not be planning on having Bazzana as their leadoff hitter in 2029, it seems like there’s a good chance he could be hitting there in September.
His ascent to the leadoff role is reminiscent of how things went with Kwan in 2022 when it became evident early that he was the best option to work atop of the lineup.
Bazzana obviously entered the Guardians’ lineup with some bigger prospect pedigree than Kwan, but he’s shown the same kind of makeup that’s helped turn Kwan into a two-time All-Star.
He entered play on Monday with a walk rate of 13% and a chase rate of just 20.5%, and went 1-for-4 on Saturday in his first game in the leadoff spot before going 3-for-4 on Sunday with a mammoth home run. He followed that up with a 1-for-4 performance on Monday with a double.
My goodness 😳

The Guardians' bottom of the lineup has been incredibly productive thanks in large part to Brayan Rocchio’s strong start to the season, but Kwan has also been a bit better since getting moved down the lineup. Putting Bazzana at the leadoff spot gives Cleveland the best of both worlds.
The obvious downside of moving him up that high is that it’s going to give opposing teams more chances to see him and have opportunities to figure out how to beat him, but the Guardians clearly think that Bazzana is good enough to make that a moot point.
While the Guardians elected to have him start the 2026 season in the minors, it hasn't take him long to earn the team’s trust.
