While the Cleveland Guardians have a variety of roster battles to pay attention tot his spring, their outfield picture stands out as the most intriguing.
From Steven Kwan potentially moving to the outfield to Stuart Fairchild looking to crack the roster, there's no shortage of storylines taking place on the outfield grass.
But the biggest storyline from that group relates to outfielders George Valera and Chase DeLauter, who made their MLB debuts last season and stand out as two of the team's top power options from the outfield.
And, according to a new update from Cleveland.com's Terry Pluto, it looks like there's a chance both outfielders could end up breaking camp with the Guardians at the end of March.
Terry Pluto had positive things to say about Chase DeLauter and George Valera chances of being on Guardians' Opening Day roster
On Saturday morning, Pluto published a notebook with what he's been hearing in spring training, which included this interesting tidbit:
"When Valera played for Cleveland in September, he looked poised at the plate. He didn’t swing at a lot of bad pitches. DeLauter is the prime outfield prospect, but Valera also looks ready for the majors... Another opinion, if DeLauter and Valera stay healthy, I’d start them in the outfield. Steven Kwan would be in center, with Valera in left and DeLauter in right."
While that's Pluto's opinion, he's been tight with the Guardians' front office for a long time, and tends to know a thing or two about the thinking behind the team's big decisions.
That said, it's easy to imagine why he'd suggest that alightment would be the Guardians' best outfield alignment. Because it is.
Although moving Kwan out of left field would be a bit bittersweet, he seems to have the skillset needed to thrive in the center of the grass, which would open up a door for both DeLauter and Valera to play next to him.
If Kwan were to say in left then Valera and DeLauter would both see a majority of their time in left field, which would make things tougher since they're both left-handed. No platoon advantage in sight.
Pluto also added that DeLauter is back hitting after his injury scare earlier this week, which is also a great sign. Even if it wasn't a serious injury, the young outfielder has yet to play in more than 60 games in a single minor league season because of injury, so the Guardians were smart to take an extra precaution with him.
The Guardians' outfield was among the league's worst last year, so it's clear that some kind of change is needed. Adding DeLauter and Valera to the fold is the easiest way to change that.
