Guardians Injuries: Updates on Colin Holderman, Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez

The Guardians are set to take on the White Sox later today in the final game of their biggest series of the year, and they’re going to do so without Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez in their starting lineup. 

While it looks like neither DeLauter or Martínez are going to go on the injured list, their injuries continue to hamper the Guardians. Here’s what you need to know. 

The Guardians are going to be without Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez again today

Both DeLauter and Martínez suffered their injuries in Monday’s season opener, as DeLauter’s right wrist soreness popped up in his final at-bat while Martínez left in the seventh inning after an awkward check swing. 

Manager Stephen Vogt described both players as day-to-day on Tuesday, and he doubled down on that on Wednesday. While he said both players are feeling better, he told reporters (including MLB.com's Tim Stebbins) that they're going to "do some work" later today to see if they can be back soon.

This is the second time the Guardians have had to navigate an injury situation like this in as many weeks; the first was when DeLauter’s initially sustained his wrist injury last week. 

He missed four games last week while he nursed that injury before returning against the Orioles last Wednesday. He went 3-for-19 in the five games he played in after returning. 

That injury has put the Guardians in a tough spot. If it was earlier in the season, putting DeLauter on the injured list would be a no-brainer (especially since they could backdate it by three days). 

But doing that now would mean the Guardians wouldn’t have DeLauter for at least a week as they’re trying to claw their way into the postseason. 

One of the things that makes DeLauter and Martínez’s injuries a bit easier to stomach is the September roster expansion. The Guardians used their additional spot on utility extraordinaire Daniel Schneemann, who has experience everywhere but catcher and first base. 

He doesn’t have the same kind of bat as DeLauter or Martínez, but his presence on the bench is a bit of utility insurance for Vogt while he has to manage down two men. 

In some good injury news, reliever Colin Holderman is set to make a rehab appearance at Triple-A tomorrow and told Stebbins that he could be back with the Guardians next week. 

Holderman’s been great for the Guardians this season (2.73 ERA in 52 2/3 innings), and would be an obvious upgrade for the bullpen spot currently held by Connor Brogdon. 

Vogt showed on Tuesday that he’s going to be aggressive in his bullpen usage over the final week-and-a-half of the season, and getting Holderman back gives him another weapon to turn to in the middle of a game.
