For the third year in a row, MLB teams are participating in Spring Breakout, which consists of a four-day event consisting of 16 exhibition games played by teams made up of each MLB organization's top prospects.
This year the Guardians will be taking on the Los Angeles Angels on March 19 for their Spring Breakout game, and they’ll be doing so with a roster made up of intriguing and exciting prospects.
The Guardians’ Spring Breakout roster features the organization's best
Although it’s a bit obvious to say that the Guardians’ Spring Breakout roster has to include the team’s Top 30 prospects per MLB Pipeline (the whole point of the game is to see the best on the field, after all), it’s still exciting to think about the Guardians' future being on the field at the same time.
The Guardians unveiled their 40-man player pool for the game on Thursday, though the final roster for the game will be anywhere between 27 to 30 players.
The position player side of the roster is led by Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter, Angel Genao, Ralphy Velazquez and Cooper Ingle — all of whom are ranked in MLB PIpeline’s list of the top 100 prospects in the sport.
While it’s hard to imagine Bazzana and DeLautere would play in the Spring Breakout since they’re competing for big league spots (and Bazzana could still be playing in the World Baseball Classic), Genao, Velazquez and Ingle should be mainstays in the lineup.
Kahlil Watson, George Valera and Juan Brito are also in the player pool, but they also fall into the “hard to imagine” category.
On the pitching side, Parker Messick leads the way, though he’s also a longshot to participate since he’s fighting to earn a spot in Cleveland's big league rotation.
But just because Messick’s not on the roster doesn’t mean that the Guardians don’t have some exciting pitching options starting with Khal Stephen, who Cleveland acquired from Toronto at last year’s deadline in exchange for Shane Bieber.
Stephen didn’t pitch much for Cleveland after the trade due to right shoulder impingement, but any pitching appearance from him should be appointment viewing for Guardians fans.
Daniel Espino also stands to get some work in the game, which would be another step in the right direction for him after he made his spring debut last week. Espino has all the talent in the world and could be a key contributor in 2026 so long as he’s able to stay healthy.
Although the Guardians have an abundance of established MLB talent on their roster, they also have a lot of young, talented prospects in the pipeline, and this year’s Spring Breakout will be a great chance to see them all in action.
