George Valera has been one of the Cleveland Guardians' most exciting prospects for some time now.
Unfortunately, due to injuries and other fast-moving prospects, he has been left in the dust and hadn't secured a major league promotion until he was called up on Monday as a part of roster expansion.
Now that Valera is healthy and back to performing at a high-level, the 24-year-old deserve serious consideration to be a part of the Opening Day squad in 2026.
George Valera should be on Guardians' Opening Day roster in 2026
Valera's call-up comes after a 2025 campaign where he's slashing .318/.388/.550 along with showcasing a consistency and power has been untouched by anyone else in Cleveland's system.
Valera signed with Cleveland as an international free agent in 2017 and quickly rose the prospect ranks.
He burst onto the scene in his first year, as he played in 52 games and crushed seven doubles and eight home runs along with 32 RBI.
His first full breakout came just a few years later in 2021 in a season where he played at both High-A and Double-A. That year, he slashed .260/.405/.505 and earned an appearance at the All-Star Futures Game alongside Jhonkensy Noel. He finished the year with 19 home runs, and seemed to be a star destined to make a major league impact for the Guardians sooner rather than later.
But it hit a road bump not long after.
Valera played in jut 79 games in 2023 while slashing .220/.349/.397.
He did a bit better in 2024 (15 doubles and 17 home runs), but he got a late start to the season due to an injury and ended up undergoing a season-ending surgery on his knee. All of that led to him being designated for assignment after the 2024 season
He ended up sticking around with the Guardians on a minor league deal, which helped set up his major league call-up.
He hit for the cycle in Triple-A earlier this year, making him the first member of the Clippers to do so since 2021. The Guardians don't have any star prospects who are setting the world on fire, so calling up Valera was an obvious choice.
Valera went hitless in his debut on Tuesday but he did work a walk in his career at-bat and came around to score.
While he wasn't able to show his power in his debut, he did showcase his keen eye and didn't seem scared of the moment.
Valera's journey has been an extreme case of ups and downs. He went from looking like the next star to being non-tendered, but he's managed it all and come back to earn his MLB debut.
And, if everything goes well in that debut, he should be manning the outfield for the Guardians on Opening Day next season.
