A former member of the Cleveland Guardians pitching staff could soon find his way to a new home. Xzavion Curry was designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins, according to a team announcement.
The Marlins needed to make room on their roster for the recently claimed Ronny Henriquez, with Curry being the odd man out. Other ball clubs could attempt to facilitate a trade for Curry now that he has been DFA'd by the Marlins. Miami may try to pass him through waivers and outright him to a minor league affiliate, but that is a lot easier said than done. The 26-year-old could generate some interest from teams looking to take a chance on a low-cost, high-reward type of acquisition in an attempt to fill out their pitching staff.
Curry landed in Miami after being designated for assignment by the Guardians late last season. Like the Marlins, Cleveland needed to clear a roster spot, and Curry was the player they determined they could do without. The Guardians needed to put together their best possible roster as they got ready for their postseason push, and it proved to work out quite well. Cleveland would go on to win the American League Central Division rather comfortably and would go on to make an appearance in the ALCS.
In 16 appearances between the Guardians and Marlins last season, Curry finished with a 4.64 ERA and 1.055 WHIP. Interestingly enough, Curry's numbers were better in Miami than Cleveland, with his 3.00 ERA and 0.611 WHIP in 18 innings as a Marlin looking a lot more useful than his 5.84 ERA and 1.378 WHIP in 24.2 innings with the Guardians.
Wherever Curry ends up after this most recent DFA remains to be seen, but it would be in the best interest of any organization to figure out the best way to utilize his talents. Curry has made 53 starts in 58 appearances in the minors and just 16 starts in 59 games in the majors. Going back and forth between starting and coming out of the bullpen across multiple levels makes it incredibly difficult for anyone to perform adequately, and Curry is no exception.
