It has been an interesting offseason for the Cleveland Guardians. The front office arranged the departure of two of their starting infielders through trades in an attempt to improve their organizational pitching depth. While this has affected a large portion of the fanbase's expectations for the Guardians in 2025, this apparently has had no impact on Bill Nye of former Science Guy fame.
Nye made an appearance on MLB Network's Hot Stove, discussing a variety of baseball-related subjects. Toward the end, Nye was asked his prediction for the 2025 World Series winner, and his choice was not one that many, if anyone, expected. Nye chose the Guardians.
This was a very bold choice by Nye, as the Guardians currently have a fair amount of questions on their roster. As mentioned above, Cleveland traded both Josh Naylor and Andres Gimenez this winter, signaling a period of transition on the right side of their infield. This ultimately resulted in Carlos Santana returning for his third stint in Cleveland and an open competition for the starting second base job.
Because of this, most view the path to success in 2025 as being a little more difficult for the Guardians. Rather than add more talent to a roster that won 92 games en route to an American League Central Division title and an appearance in the ALCS, Cleveland has made a series of moves that appear to be more lateral in nature than representing an attempt at going all-in.
A lot of things will have to go Cleveland's way if they are going to be a competitive team, much less win the World Series, as Nye predicted. With that being said, it may be best to trust the opinion of someone with an Ivy League education when it comes to how things might play out during the 2025 MLB season (Nye graduated from Cornell in 1977, ever heard of it?).
