It was a rough night in San Diego for the Cleveland Guardians, as they experienced plenty of trouble in their second of three games with the Padres.
The Guardians managed just two hits in the contest, as they ended up on the losing side of a 7-0 final score. Steven Kwan and Gabriel Arias were the only two Cleveland hitters to collect a hit off of Padres starter Michael King. The former reliever turned starter would strike out 11 and walk one in his 5 dominant innings on the mound, leaving the Guardians looking for answers.
Losing the game is one thing, but the manner in which they lost is not ideal. This was the second straight game the Guardians lost in San Diego, and their offensive effort was somehow even more discouraging this time around. Cleveland at least scored two runs on eight hits in Monday's loss. It's not great, but it's still better than what transpired during Tuesday's lackluster affair.
Another letdown performance from a Guardians starter
Logan Allen made his first start of the season for the Guardians, and like Luis Ortiz before him, this outing was a dud. Allen allowed four hits on seven hits and five walks in 5.1 innings, hardly an acceptable performance for a starting pitcher.
Cleveland needed Allen to be significantly better than Ortiz's outing the night before, and it was pretty much more of the same. There was a reason why Allen was sent down to Triple-A last season, and if this is a sign of what's to come, could very well find himself on the outside looking in yet again.
With one game left in the series before what appears to be a much-needed off day to reset on Thursday, the Guardians will be looking to avoid getting swept by San Diego. Having the short break between games after being on the wrong side of a series sweep could have a lasting impact during the next series, and that simply cannot happen. Hopefully, the Guardians can shake off this two-game slump and leave San Diego on a more positive note.
