Angel Genao records first signature moment with performance Guardians weren’t getting earlier in 2026 

Sometimes it can be hard to remember that Angel Genao has only been with the Guardians for a little less than a month. 

In fact, it wasn’t that long ago that some people (can’t imagine who) were practically begging the Guardians to include him in trade talks. But the team’s decisionmakers (wisely) held off trading him and promoted him to the majors as a part of their roster remake. 

After being a quiet contributor through his first couple weeks on the Guardians’ roster, Genao recorded his first signature moment on Tuesday with a huge pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning of the Guardians’ win over the Blue Jays. 

Not bad, rook.

Angel Genao took care of business against the Blue Jays

Genao may only be 22, but his swing against Toronto made it look like he'd been in the big leagues for years, as he blasted the first pitch he saw from Joe Mantiply 426 feet to left field to extend the Guardians’ lead to 4-1. 

It also came with a veteran-worthy celebration that included a primal scream down the first base line and a salute and stomp at third base. 

He also made a great impression with his glove two innings later when he ranged to his left to get a grounder before unleashing a great jump throw to nab Alejandro Kirk at second base. 

That’s a far cry from the beginning of the year when the Guardians were forced to cycle through David Fry and the light-hitting Daniel Schneemann in the role.

While Schneemann returned to the Guardians’ roster on Tuesday via one of their extra roster spots, most of his playing time will come as a late-game defensive replacement. Meanwhile, Genao's making a name for himself in games that he only plays three innings in.

Genao’s homer also was sandwiched between two other two run home runs, one of which came in the form of a go-ahead (opposite field) homer from Patrick Bailey while the other was an eighth inning blast from Angel Martínez that put the game away. 

Those two homers helped back up a great outing from Gavin Williams who recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts over seven dominant innings.

While his slim Cy Young chances took a huge hit with his short outing his last week, his start against the Blue Jays showed why he’d give the Guardians a huge advantage as a Game 2 starter in a postseason series. 

The win also helped the Guardians add more of an advantage over the Blue Jays, who are now 2 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the Wild Card standings and are now in danger of leaving Cleveland with an insurmountable postseason deficit. 

While Genao wasn’t on any Blue Jays’ fans radar earlier this season, he’s not going to have many friends North of the border thanks to his huge homer on Tuesday. Now we’ll have to wait and see if he’s able to do anything else in the final two games of the series.
