3. Luke Maile - Catcher
Throughout his nine-year MLB career, Luke Maile has shown that he is a capable backup to the right team that at least has a solid starting backstop. Ideally, Maile rarely plays while the regular starter sees the bulk of playing time behind the plate.
Maile has never wowed anyone with a bat in his hand, slashing .208/.274/.252 in 433 games with 58 doubles and 21 home runs. This is not necessarily an impressive stat line, but that is not why he continues to find work. More often than not, Maile is able to provide value through his defense rather than offense, and that is a trait that teams value in a backup catcher.
The soon-to-be 34-year-old spent the 2022 season with Cleveland, appearing in 76 games for the Guardians. Maile finished the season with 40 hits in 206 plate appearances, including 10 doubles and three home runs. Maile has since spent the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, registering 66 hits in 127 games, with 14 doubles and eight home runs.
Even though he is not a starter or really a big difference-maker, expect Maile to find a new home before the upcoming season.
