2. Cal Quantrill - Starting Pitcher

It was just a few years ago that Cal Quantrill appeared to be a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter. Posting a 3.08 ERA and 1.196 in 90 appearances from 2020-2022, Quantrill looked the part of someone who would stick around in a starting rotation for years to come. Unfortunately, this was short-lived.

2023 was a rough season for Quantrill, finishing with a 5.24 ERA and 1.465 WHIP in 19 starts for the Guardians. Everything that previously went right for Quantrill suddenly went wrong, and this resulted in being designated for assignment by the Guardians following the season.

Quantrill would land in Colorado after the Rockies and Guardians agreed to terms on a trade after being DFA'd. 2024 did not go any better for Quantrill, as his lone season with the Rockies resulted in a 4.98 ERA, 1.517 WHIP, and a National League-leading 69 walks.

The most likely outcome for Quantrill is to take a one-year deal with a team that believes he is better than his performance from last year and can pitch better in the right circumstances. Even if it starts as a minor league deal, it is still better than being without a team which just so happens to be his current situation. Given his pitching profile, a pitcher-friendly ballpark would do him wonders rather than the hitter-friendly Coors Field.
