It is past the midway point of January, and there are still several prominent names that remain unsigned. Interestingly enough, there are seven who once called Cleveland home in one way or another, and the following seven names fit that distinction.
1. Anthony Santander - Outfielder
This is more of a technicality than anything, as Anthony Santander never reached the big leagues while he was part of Cleveland's organization. Santander did not advance past A-ball during his time in Cleveland's minor league system before being selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft. It was in Baltimore that Santander got his chance in the bigs and showed that he could contribute at a high level.
In eight seasons with the Orioles, Santander has a career .246/.307/.469 slash line with 155 home runs and 155 doubles. Santander hit a career-high 44 home runs last season and 41 doubles in 2023, showing that he is still able to be a meaningful contributor offensively, which only makes his prolonged excursion into free agency even more puzzling.
The longer Santander remains a free agent, the more likely it seems he will sign a short-term or even a one-year deal just so he can possibly sign the long-term deal he was hoping for next offseason. Wherever he ends up, you better believe that Santander will keep up his production and provide his new team with an additional source of offense.
