1B Mike Napoli, 2016
The 2016 season truly was a ‘Party at Napoli’s’ in Cleveland. A World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox and an All-Star with the Texas Rangers, Napoli started his career as a catcher with the Angels before moving to a full-time first baseman.
He signed a one-year, $7 million deal with Cleveland, which has turned into one of the best moves the team has made in recent memory. While he nearly reached 200 strikeouts (his 194 strikeouts are still the most in club history),
Napoli cleared both the 30 home run and 100 RBI plateaus and raised more than $200,000 for the Cleveland Clinic thanks to his “Party at Napoli’s” T-shirts.
He played one more season in MLB for the Rangers, and is currently working for Terry Francona as a staff assistant for the Reds.
1B Yonder Alonso, 2018
After rolling with Carlos Santana as their first baseman in 2017, Cleveland traded Santana to Philadelphia ahead of the 2018 season and replaced him with Alonso, who they signed to a two-year deal.
Alonso hit .250 with 23 home runs and 83 RBI in 145 games on a Cleveland team that won 91 games but didn’t put up much of a fight against the Astros in the American League Division Series.
Alonso’s time with the team was a one-year stint, however, as the Indians traded Alonso to the White Sox in the offseason in exchange for prospect Alex Call.
