The 2025 season offseason has been one defined by a lack of inaction from the Guardians’ front office. While Chris Antonetti and Co. have gone out of their way to sign seemingly every free agent reliever under the sun, they haven't done much to add to an offense that’s in clear need of some upgrades.
Although there’s no excuse for Cleveland’s front office not adding at least one MLB-established offensive addition, sometimes the best move is the one you don’t make.
So, with Antonetti’s inaction in mind, here’s a look at five of the team’s worst free agent signings that occurred under his watch.
5. Carlos Santana
The Guardians reunited with Santana last offseason in the hopes that he’d serve as a good veteran complement and mentor to Kyle Manzardo.
And while he was still a leader in the clubhouse, his on-field fall off was hard to ignore. He hit just .225 in 116 games with the Guardians and had the worst slugging percentage (.341) among first baseman with 305+ plate appearances.
The Cubs claimed him off waivers after the Guardians cut him loose at the end of August, but he only appeared in eight games with them and was left off their postseason roster.
Santana’s one of the best players in Guardians history, but his final tenure with the club left a lot to be desired.
