Spring training is almost here, and it will not be long before we will have a slightly better idea of how the Cleveland Guardians will perform in 2025. If the Guardians are to be successful, there are three nightmare roster scenarios that they must avoid while in Arizona (injuries excluded).
1. Nobody claims the starting second base job
Make no mistake here, this is not about finding a long-term solution to the current vacancy at second base in spring or during the upcoming season. This is about avoiding a situation where multiple players are deployed throughout the season because none of them proved better than another in spring.
Juan Brito and Gabriel Arias are the leading candidates for the position, as Brito is looking to break into the majors, and Arias is hoping to hang on for a little bit longer. But if they fail to impress, it could result in a timeshare situation with others such as Daniel Schneemann, Tyler Freeman, and Angel Martinez being considered for playing time once the games begin to count.
Cleveland just needs to get through this season with a viable option at second until the time is right for Travis Bazzana to get his turn and, hopefully, be the Guardians' starting second baseman for years to come.
