The Cleveland Indians will no longer be sporting Chief Wahoo on the uniforms in 2019, but that doesn’t mean the team is completely moving on.
Cleveland Indians fans have been waiting for some big news all offseason.
Yesterday’s news wasn’t exactly what most fans had in mind.
The news broke that the Indians will get rid of the Chief Wahoo logo on the uniforms starting in 2019, and as expected this led to quite a polarizing response on social media.
But one interesting bit of the story involves the fact that the logo won’t disappear entirely.
The Indians will maintain control of the Chief Wahoo trademark. In order to do so, it will still have a limited retail presence. No retail presence would open door for another party to seize control of the mark and profit from it.

So yes, it appears the Indians will continue to profit off the logo after it is removed from the uniforms. This may anger some, but it does make sense given the law. If the Indians gave it up entirely, someone else would surely start using the logo for their own gain.
What constitutes a “limited retail presence” remains to be seen. However, it is not like the logo is going to disappear from the world once the team takes it off the uniforms. Fans will continue to sport it, with some doing it out of spite and others because it is just on the gear they have.
Moves like this eventually become less polarizing with time, but this issue will remain in focus for the next year considering the change isn’t happening until 2019.
The important thing to remember is that the change is happening no matter how angry one is about it. Being overly angry about it will just cause stress about a decision that has already been made. And at the end of the day, all that should matter is the success of the players on the field.

With the Chief Wahoo news it's awesome to hear the amount of people wanting to see our C Feather design as the new logo. We understand both sides but if the Chief is going away for good we still need to acknowledge our teams heritage with more than the block C. RT if you agree! pic.twitter.com/PIoP4LyNzL

Dealing with change
Change is never easy. It is why some fans are genuinely upset with the logo news, but hopefully the reasoning behind the move makes sense to those upset as time goes on.

This news dropping during the offseason also makes it stand out more because there is no baseball to talk about. Hopefully a great season by the team on the field will help relieve some of the stress.
