Cleveland Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway could be on the move as he remains a top candidate for open managerial positions around MLB.

Cleveland Indians fans have witnessed Mickey Callaway‘s magic with the pitching staff since 2013, but that could be coming to an end.

The benefit of being a notable assistant coach is that you jump to the front of the line when manager jobs open up, and that is true for Callaway.

Right now, there are four manager jobs open: Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.

And this from Peter Gammons:

Callaway has been with the Indians since Terry Francona arrived in 2013 and has helped transform the likes of Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer and Danny Salazar into legitimate stars. The same holds true for the likes of Bryan Shaw, Cody Allen and all those who have passed through the bullpen since 2013.

There is an argument, and one I agree with, that the Indians should pay Callaway manager money to keep him as the pitching coach, if that truly is his expertise. That would be ideal, but it is hard to ask a coach like Callaway to turn down the chance to become a manager. He could always go back to being a pitching coach if it doesn’t work out.

Even if Callaway goes on to become a manager elsewhere, he has made his mark on this staff, so fans shouldn’t expect any decline in production next year except for some natural regression throughout the season.

Fans don’t want to see him go, but at the same time it would be hard to be upset as we all know just how great of a coach Callaway has been for the Indians, and the wonders he could do as a manager.
