A historic comeback on Friday night adds to the long list of different ways the Cleveland Indians have won in 2017.
Any Cleveland Indians fan watching Friday night’s game against the New York Yankees was concerned about the way the game was going early.
The Bombers from the Bronx got to Corey Kluber early. After that, Edwin Encarnacion sustained an ankle injury in an attempt to avoid being doubled up and the Yankees then drove Mike Clevinger out in his first bullpen appearance of the postseason. By the sixth inning, they had an 8-3 lead over the Tribe.
Things looked bleak for the Indians before the sixth inning, but then Lonnie Chisenhall was hit by a pitch in the hands, (it was a close call), to load the bases, bringing Francisco Lindor to the plate.
One of the many ways the Indians won in 2017 came in April against the Texas Rangers; when Lindor hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth to give the Indians the lead. Lindor’s grand slam on Friday didn’t win the game for the Indians or give them the lead. It did, however, give the Indians new life.
During the Indians’ historic win streak, Jay Bruce delivered the Indians their record 22nd win in a row with a walk-off homer. Last night in the eighth inning, Bruce’s home run brought back thoughts of not only that walk-off from their streak, but also thoughts of Thursday night’s difference making home run from Bruce.
Once the 13th inning of Friday’s game came around, Indians fans weren’t thinking about if the Tribe would win this game. They were thinking how would they find a way to walk off.
Austin Jackson then stole second base in the 13th. It set up for something fans had seen once this year. Yan Gomes had already hit a walk-off once this year. It came in August against the Colorado Rockies. After walking him earlier, the Yankees had no choice but to face Gomes again. Yan Gomes delivered the walk-off that sent Cleveland into a frenzy.
Why these wild wins shouldn’t be surprising
Despite any odds that seem to be against this team, the Indians seem to keep finding ways to win. Whether it’s in dramatic fashion like last night, or a dominant win against a team they weren’t supposed to beat. Even when injuries strike like they have all season, this team keeps winning. On Friday, everything that wasn’t supposed to happen to them happened. But the Indians still showed they can win in any situation.
There have been times this year when the Indians starters haven’t been at their best and it was up to the bullpen keep them in the game. Friday was no exception to that, and once again the Indians bullpen delivered. It has never been on one players’ back to win these games for the Tribe. It almost seems like someone different is making winning plays for them every night.

All the ways the Indians have won on the season goes to show just how good they are. There’s not a specific thing that they specialize in that opposing teams can neutralize. They are good when it comes to every part of the game, and it’s become their saving grace. Teams can try to shut down the Indians all postseason, they’re just going to find another way to beat you.
