The Cleveland Indians Drop Game and Series to the New York Mets

The Cleveland Indians fell to the New York Mets today 6-0.  Starter Corey Kluber got off to a rough start allowing three runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for the Mets as the Indians had no answer for Steven Matz. The Mets starter went seven shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out nine.  Overall the Mets pitchers struck out 15 Indians’ hitters today.

Kluber meanwhile allowed six “earned” runs in six innings of work.  After giving up three legit runs in the first inning, he another three runs in the second inning after center fielder Rajai Davis lost a routine flyball in the sun that ended up going for a “triple.”  Things went from bad to worse after another ball was lost by Davis and before you knew it the Mets had another three runs on the board, all after the first two were easy outs.  All three runs were considered earned despite the two misplays by Davis.

While overall the outing looked bad for Kluber, after the second inning he went four scoreless innings allowing just two hits. He also struck out eight hitters in six innings on the day.  The Tribe trio of Ross Detwiler, Joba Chamberlain, and Dan Otero each worked a scoreless inning of relief as well for the Indians.

While the Indians offense was completely absent today, they did manage to score 11 runs over the weekend against what many consider one of the best rotations in baseball.  The Indians will look to regroup with an off day tomorrow before opening a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday at Progressive Field.
