Cleveland Indians Make Series of Roster Moves
Earlier today it was made known that Carlos Santana would not be joining the team in Seattle as he remained behind for the birth of his daughter. The Cleveland Indians have since announced that Santana was placed on the paternity list and likely will miss the entire Seattle Mariners series, which runs through Sunday. Santana may only stay on the paternity list for three days, so in order to miss the Sunday afternoon game he may have to be put on the restricted list (per Jordan Bastian).
Taking Santana’s place on the roster will be outfielder Jerry Sands. Sands previously was a member of the Indians and had a very memorable game as most will remember. He was, however, eventually designated for assignment and after clearing waivers returned to the Columbus Clippers. He had to be re-added to the 40-man roster and took the spot left vacant after Brett Hayes was designated a few days ago. The Mariners are slated to have three left-handed starters go in the four-game set so the extra right-handed bat should come in handy this weekend.
The Cleveland Indians also announced that they placed Scott Atchison on the 15-day disabled list due what the team is calling a left ankle strain. Scott Atchison has not had the same success in 2015 as he was graced with in 2014 as he’s stumbled to a 5.74 ERA in 19 games. He’s allowed a staggering four home runs in a mere 15.2 innings this year (2.3 per 9 innings), including a 2-run homerun in yesterday afternoon’s game against the White Sox.
To take the place of Atchison the Cleveland Indians recalled reliever Austin Adams. Like Sands, Adams is no stranger to the big league club this year having already been up and down multiple times in the season’s first two months. On the season Adams has pitched in 5.2 innings with a 1.89 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. Normally a big strikeout guy (14.0K/9 in minors this year), he’s managed only a 1.6K/9 ratio in his short time with the big league club.
The Indians have not said how severe the ankle injury is with Atchison or how long they expect him out. Given his struggles some time off may be exactly what the doctor ordered. His loss could be Austin Adams’ gain as he looks to finally get an extended look with the big league club after being in the I-71 express for most of the year. Sands figures to only be around until Sunday at the latest though things can certainly change.
