The Cleveland Indians hope that Francisco Lindor has a long productive career with the organization..
They certainly do not want to rush the not yet 21-year old (turns 21 on November 14th) to the big leagues but he certainly is making it tempting to do just that.
As a 20-year old playing for their Double-A affiliate Akron RubberDucks this season he hit .278/.352/.389 and added 25 stolen bases while showing a very disciplined approach at the plate (61K/40BB) spanning 387 plate appearances.
On July 22nd the Indians promoted him from the Ducks to their Triple-A affiliate Columbus Clippers. “As a player, you don’t expect it, you hope for it and you work for it,” Lindor told Ashley Marshall of milb.com after the game. “I’m excited, very happy. I can’t wait. [The day] wasn’t so good because we lost our fifth game in a row, but it got better.”
His tenure with the Clippers got off to a rousing start as he hit .364 (8 for 22) over his first seven games but then he seemed to meet some resistance. Over his next dozen games he hit just .145 (8 for 55) and during that span he struck out 15 times while only walking twice.
For those tracking Lindor’s progress this season the question was whether this was a normal slump that all players go through during the season or did Triple-A scouts and pitching coaches find a hole in his swing or approach that can be exploited.
He has responded by hitting .395 (17 for 43) over his last 11 games including a home run. Over his last two games he has gone 8 for 9 with a home run and scored four runs and belted his fourth home run with the Clippers.
With the Clippers he has appeared in 3o games and is hitting .287 (37 for 129) and has a slash line of .287/.316/.395. Thus far with the Clippers he has been a streaky hitter and has not shown the disciplined approach at the plate but there is a possibility that much of that was just trying to do too much to impress new teammates.
Now with just a few weeks to go in the season and a fair amount of games under his belt Lindor can focus on continuing to put his foot firmly on the last door to the majors and force the Indians into a tough decision come next March.
