Cleveland Indians’ Josh Outman To Make AAA Start

LHP Josh Outman, recently outrighted to AAA Columbus by the Cleveland Indians after being designated for assignment and later clearing waivers, will start game two of the Columbus Clippers’s traditional doubleheader.

Massie’s tweet doesn’t specify Outman will start game two, but the Columbus Clippers Web site confirms he will get the ball in the nightcap.

Though used exclusively by the Indians as a reliever, and though he’s spent most of his career as a LOOGY, Outman came up through the minor leagues as a starter, and started most recently in the majors for the Colorado Rockies in 2012. It’s likely there isn’t a ton to read into here, the Clippers have an all-star break coming up as well, not to mention Cleveland has tabbed Zach McAllister to make a start on Saturday for the Tribe, leaving Columbus a little short-handed.

Outman is no longer on the Indians’s 40-man roster, and has been buried in the depth charts by LHPs Kyle Crockett, Nick Hagadone and Marc Rzepczynski, so even though this does not appear to be a long-term move to get Outman out of the pen, it could become an interesting situation if he performs well.
