Cleveland Indians Rumors: Roberto Perez On The Way?

Hours after the Cleveland Indians made a minor deal, trading for OF Chris Dickerson to shore up the outfield defense and designating CA George Kottaras for assignment (again), rumors are swirling that catching prospect Roberto Perez could join the team, despite the limited use a backup catcher (Kottaras had 21 at bats in 10 games over two separate stints with the Indians this year), another move could be on the way to keep Carlos Santana from being behind the plate too much. Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes tweeted:

As of now, no move has been made, and it’s unlikely a move is made prior to tonight’s 7:10 p.m. start, but after the game could be another story. Possibilities for a move include a demotion for OF Tyler Holt (called up prior to Sunday’s win) among the more reasonable possibilities.

Roberto Perez is a 25-year-old, right-handed catcher, and his bat has really made the leap this year at AAA Columbus, posting a .305/.405/.517 slashline in 174 at bats this season for the Clip Show. Perez was originally a 33rd-round pick in the 2008 draft by the Indians. He’s a bit of an off-the-radar prospect, as his offense has been a tad slow to develop, but between Santana, Yan Gomes, Perez, Tony Wolters and Francisco Meja, the Indians have some rather intriguing possibilities at the catcher position.
