Robbie Aviles Named Midwest League Pitcher Of The Week

After tossing six no-hit innings including retiring the first 17 West Michigan Whitecaps he faced batters he was awarded as the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 12 through 18th.  

He is the second Captains pitcher to win the award in as many weeks as Adam Plutko won the award last week.

The Indians drafted Aviles in the 7th round of the 2010 draft out of Suffern High School in New York. He was projected to go higher but he had to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery prior to the draft.

He appeared in seven games for the Tribe’s rookie league team in 2011 before spending 2012 with the Indians Low-A affiliate Mahoning Valley Scrappers where he continue his comeback appearing in 15 games (5 starts) but was limited to just 38.2 innings of work.

Last year he appeared in 16 games for the Captains increasing his inning to 69 and posting a 4-5 record with a 5.09 ERA.

Thus far in 2014 he is having a breakthrough year. He has already made appeared in 8 games (3 starts) and has thrown 38.2IP. In his last three starts he worked he has delivered 19 innings and allowed just three earned runs striking out 11 and walking 5. He has held the opposition to a batting average of .148 (9×61).
