2013 MLB Draft Prospect Profiles: An Introduction

The MLB Draft is often a gamble. Even with great scouting, the right choices, and a top pick, an all star player is far from guaranteed. No matter how great a player looked in high school or college, there’s always the chance that the player will never pan out.

He may spend most of his career in the minors before having several unsuccessful stints in the big leagues. He may not make it at all. And the best players from a draft class are often picked outside of the top 5-10 picks. Take 2009, for example, when 24 teams chose to pass on Mike Trout.

However, there’s a chance of significant returns on those top picks. If a team chooses wisely and the player works hard, something special could occur.

The Indians have the fifth overal; pick in the 2013 MLB Draft. While there’s no prospect in this draft who has been hyped like Bryce Harper or Stephen Strasburg was, there are players available who definitely have the potential to be significant contributors. The team already has several promising prospects who are a few years away from being called up. This new addition, combined with those players, could form a solid young core for the future.

For this series, I’d like to take a look at the top players that may be on the board when the Indians make their selection in June.  There will be a definite focus on pitching, as the team is low on top prospects in that category, but there will be some position players covered as well.

As a 22-year-old with a part-time job, I don’t really have the capability to thoroughly scout all these prospects in person. Thus, I’ll be relying on scouting reports from other sites in addition to in-game video posted online. My goal is to get a consensus opinion (in addition to my own) from notable sources to give Wahoo’s On First readers a bit of knowledge about potential future Indians.
