This Week In Indians Baseball: Week 22

After a bad end to a bad month, the Indians aimed to get on the right track by opening up September with a win on Saturday. The Oakland Athletics had a four-game sweep over the Tribe in Cleveland. The Texas Rangers then came to Progressive Field for a visit.

Game 128: Athletics 3, Indians 0

W: Brett Anderson, L: Roberto Hernandez

Hernandez had a short outing due to a sprained ankle, exiting the game after 2.1 innings and three runs scored. Pitching was not the problem for the Tribe as Chris Seddon, who came in to relieve Hernandez, went 4.2 scoreless innings with two hits. Cody Allen joined in, going two scoreless innings while only allowing one hit. The offense was lost at the plate, with the only two hits coming from Michael Brantley and Brent Lillibridge. The batters drew three walks but struck out ten times. (full recap here)

• Game 129: Athletics 7, Indians 0

W: Tommy Milone, L: Zach McAllister

The Athletics silenced the Indians at the plate again on Tuesday night. They were able to accumulate eight hits, but it was all for naught as no runs would cross the plate. The A’s scattered seven runs throughout the game, with McAllister taking the brunt of the blame. Tony Sipp and Esmil Rogers combined for 3.1 innings of hitless relief in the middle of the game. • Game 130: Athletics 8, Indians 4

W: Travis Blackley, L: Corey Kluber

The Indians got on the board first with two runs in the third with a Jason Donald home run and a Jason Kipnis ground out, scoring Ezequiel Carrera. The A’s responded in the next half inning with three runs of their own. The Athletics continued to score runs for the remainder of the game, but the Indians would only score two in the bottom of the eighth. Kluber pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. He struck out seven. (full recap here) 

• Game 131: Athletics 12, Indians 7

W: Jarrod Parker, L: Justin Masterson

Jason Kipnis led off the game with a homer to get things rolling in the high-scoring affair on Thursday. A big fourth inning for the A’s proved to be a big roadblock for the Tribe. The Indians added runs throughout the game, including a big inning in the sixth. Masterson struggled and was forced to an early exit after the fourth inning. He was charged with eight runs on eight hits and two walks. (full recap here)

Game 132: Rangers 5, Indians 3

W: Ryan Dempster, L: Ubaldo Jimenez

A ninth-inning rally was not enough for the Indians, who came halfway to erasing a 5-1 deficit in the final frame. In the ninth inning, the Indians put up a threat with a two-run Casey Kotchman homer, but that was all they could string together. Jimenez went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. (full recap here) 

• Game 133: Indians 4, Rangers 3

W: Jeanmar Gomez, L: Scott Feldman

A four-run first inning proved to be just enough to guide the Indians to a victory on Saturday night. Carlos Santana doubled to bring home Shin-Soo Choo and Jason Kipnis and Casey Kotchman and Jack Hannahan brought home runs on groundouts. Jeanmar Gomez got the spot start, going 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on four hits and two walks and striking out five. Joe Smith, Vinnie Pestano and Esmil Rogers combined for 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. (full recap here)

• Game 134: Rangers 8, Indians 3

W: Derek Holland, L: Zach McAllister

Zach McAllister gave up seven runs—including four homers—in five innings in the series finale, and the Indians couldn’t recover. Carlos Santana and Thomas Neal were responsible for the Tribe’s offense: Santana hit a two-run homer off Holland in the bottom of the third, and Neal got his first career hit and RBI with a run-scoring double in the eighth inning of his MLB debut.
