This Week In Indians Baseball: Week 9

The Indians started a three-city, nine game road trip this week. The Tribe faced off against the Detroit Tigers first, taking two of three, then moved on to play the St. Louis Cardinals, again taking two of three. Overall, the Indians went 4-2.

Game 54: Indians 4, Tigers 2

W: Ubaldo Jimenez, L: Drew Smyly

The Indians locked in a win via a rare feat, scoring runs on three triples to open up a long road trip in Detroit. The triples came from Asdrubal Cabrera in the third, Lou Marson in the fifth and Michael Brantley in the sixth, with each plating a run. On the mound, Ubaldo Jimenez led the Tribe to victory, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 6.2 innings. (full recap here)

• Game 55: Indians 9, Tigers 6

W: Jeanmar Gomez, L: Max Scherzer

Jeanmar Gomez didn’t impress with his performance on Wednesday, allowing the Tigers to cross the plate six times in five innings. The Tribe offense had his back though, routing the Tigers’ pitching staff for nine runs, led by a three-run first inning home run from Michael Brantley. (full recap here)

• Game 56: Tigers 7, Indians 5

W: Casey Crosby, L: Derek Lowe

Detroit jumped on the Tribe early, forging a lead too great for Cleveland to overcome. With the Tigers leading 7-1 through five innings, the Indians started to stage a comeback, but missed opportunities proved lethal. Derek Lowe’s lackluster performance was marred by a four-run first inning; on the day, he went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk. (full recap here)

Game 57: Indians 6, Cardinals 2

W: Josh Tomlin, L: Jake Westbrook

It was an all-around strong performance for the Tribe on Friday night. Josh Tomlin held the Cardinals scoreless through six innings, surrendering two in the seventh inning. The Indians got on the board in the first with two runs against longtime Cleveland pitcher Jake Westbrook on a double from Carlos Santana and a groundout from Michael Brantley. The Tribe continued to add runs throughout the game, topped off with a two-run Johnny Damon home run. (full recap here)

• Game 58: Cardinals 2, Indians 0

W: Kyle Lohse, L: Justin Masterson

The Cardinals and Indians were locked into a pitchers duel on Saturday in St. Louis. Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Lohse came away with the win as the Indians were shut out for the first time this year. A mistake from Justin Masterson in the third inning allowed Carlos Beltran to deposit a ball over the wall for a home run. (full recap here)

• Game 59: Indians 4, Cardinals 1

W: Vinnie Pestano, L: Jason Motte

The Indians and Cardinals were deadlocked at one apiece until the ninth inning, when Jason Kipnis came to the plate and sent a ball over the right field fence for a three-run homer. Ubaldo Jimenez came through with a strong performance, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings. Vinnie Pestano worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Chris Perez nailed down the win with his Major-League leading 20^th save of the season. (full recap here)
