Are Indians in on Ike Davis?

On Tuesday, Indians GM Chris Antonetti told a group of reporters that he was working on a deal “that would be very surprising if it came to fruition,” according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. “I’m pretty sure I could give you 50 guesses,” Antonetti said, “and you probably wouldn’t get it.”

Then, on Wednesday, we learned that the Indians had several different trade proposals in the field. Presumably, the unguessable target is one of them.

I’ve already accepted Antonetti’s challenge and offered a guess: Brandon Belt. Today, I humbly propose another idea: Ike Davis.

The New York Post‘s Joel Sherman reported Wednesday that the Mets were taking offers on every player on the roster not named David Wright. It would take a lot to pry Davis from New York, but if they’re willing to entertain offers, that’s a promising start.

An ankle injury limited Davis, 24, to 36 games this year, but he’s apparently all better now. And he absolutely raked in his limited action, hitting .302/.383/.543 with 7 home runs, 25 RBI and 1.4 fWAR. Even if he doesn’t come close to keeping up that torrid pace in 2012, he’d almost assuredly be a huge upgrade over Matt LaPorta or any other in-house candidates for the starting first-base job, both next year and beyond.

This is pure speculation on my part, and even if the Indians have inquired about Davis they might have been deterred but what would certainly be a lofty asking price. But unlikely as the idea may seem, the Mets are apparently open for business and Davis would be a great fit in Cleveland. It’d certainly fit Antonetti’s promise of a surprise.
