Why Mark DeRosa Is The Key to The 2009 Cleveland Indians Success

Based on the video clip, you can see how very popular Mark DeRosa was in Chicago.  DeRosa was always a fan favorite because of his versatility, hustle, and do-what-it-takes attitude.  Cleveland fans should be thrilled to have a guy that can play every position on any day except pitcher or catcher.  Last season DeRosa started 80 games at second, 10 games at third, 32 in RF, and 37 in LF.  This kind of versatility just doesn’t exist with many of today’s prima donna players.

As far as numbers go, DeRosa put up 21 homers and 87 RBI for the 2008 Cubs.  In 2,409 at-bats DeRosa has 69, HR, 740 hits, 406 runs, 352 RBI, and has hit 279.  He was selected by Atlanta in the 7th round of the June 1996 free agent draft.

Mark turns 34 today, February 26!  In my opinion, DeRosa has never had the chance to play every day until last season.  He was a journeyman for the most part.  As he delivered clutch hits, hustled, played great defense from anywhere, and showed he can handle everyday action, Lou Piniella had no choice but to find places to play him. 

Take notice of this guy Indians fans!  By the end of the 2009 season Mark DeRosa may be your favorite player.  His contributions should go a long way in hopes of the Tribe securing an AL Central title in 2009.

Cactus League: The Indians lost to San Francisco, 10 – 7,  to start the exhibition season.  Mark DeRosa hit a three-run homer for Cleveland, but it was not enough to fight back from a four run deficit.  Matt Herges threw a perfect ninth inning and recorded two strikeouts. 

The Indians face the Arizona Diamondbacks today.
