2. 2024 Guardians player that will not be missed - Estevan Florial
The Cleveland Guardians acquired once highly regarded outfielder Estevan Florial from the New York Yankees for Cody Morris in an unheralded swap of players whose path to playing time in the majors was blocked.
Cleveland was attempting to try and improve their outfield mix, as there was then and still is now just one everyday outfielder in the group (Steven Kwan). Unfortunately, Florial was not the answer they were looking for.
Florial's time in Cleveland was brief and not all that different from his limited time in New York, slashing .173/.264/.367 with six doubles, three home runs, and two triples, driving in 11 runs and stealing two bases in 111 plate appearances for the Guardians. Due to his poor performance, Florial was designated for assignment by the Guardians and was subsequently outrighted to Triple-A Columbus after clearing waivers.
No one faults the thought process used by the Guardians by bringing Florial into the fold. Cleveland needed outfield help, and trying to get some by way of trading Cody Anderson was an acceptable path to do so. The only real problem was keeping Florial on the roster once it was abundantly clear that he was the same player he had always been in the majors.
