Petey Halpin is playing himself onto the Guardians’ Opening Day roster
Last year Halpin appeared in eight games for the Guardians across the regular season and postseason after he was called up at the end of September.
That brief MLB cameo has set up the best spring of his life, as Halpin entered play on Wednesday hitting .350 (7-for-20) with one home run, four RBI, four walks and three stolen bases.
Halpin’s slugged double-digit home runs in the past two seasons in the minors, and his strong showing this spring makes it seem like that pop isn’t going anywhere.
Although Steven Kwan, George Valera and DeLauter seem locked into the Guardians' top three outfield spots, the fourth outfielder spot is up for grabs, which is where Halpin could come in. Not only does he have the skillset teams covet in their backup outfielders, but he also hits from the right side.
Halpin and Stuart Fairchild are the top two options for that spot, but Halpin has a bit of an advantage since he’s already on the 40-man roster.
