Playing his way onto the Cleveland Guardians' Opening Day roster: Gabriel Arias

The second primary candidate for the position previously occupied by Andres Gimenez, Gabriel Arias is performing well enough that he has established himself as the clear front runner and should be considered the favorite to be Cleveland's starting second baseman on Opening Day over Juan Brito.

Arias has seven hits in 29 at-bats with two doubles and one home run while striking out six times and walking once. This is not necessarily impressive, but it is better than what the aforementioned Brito has done so far in Arizona, and when it comes down to it, this could be the difference in who wins the job and who ends up relegated to a less desirable status.

Coming into spring training, Arias was one of a select few players who could have found themselves on the chopping block if they did not perform well enough, as he is out of minor league options. And again, Arias is not doing anything remotely outstanding at the plate, but he is performing well enough to genuinely be in consideration to be Cleveland's Opening Day starter at second base over the rest of the field, and that is something that does matter.
