Playing his way off of the Cleveland Guardians' Opening Day roster: Joey Cantillo
Just like the previously mentioned Logan Allen, Joey Cantillo came into spring training in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster of the Cleveland Guardians. Unlike Allen, unfortunately, Cantillo is not performing at a level that would result in being part of Cleveland's pitching staff once the regular season begins.
In his four spring training appearances, Cantillo has allowed eight runs on 13 hits while walking seven in 9.2 innings. There is one aspect of his spring that is encouraging, and that would be his 15 strikeouts, the second-highest total for Guardians pitchers currently.
Cantillo has had an issue with giving up multiple runs this spring, allowing four in 1 inning on March 1st while the other four were spread out a little bit more in 3.2 innings of work on March 12th. Seeing the runs come over multiple innings rather than just one is progress, but hardly the type that would result in being part of Cleveland's Opening Day roster.
The 25-year-old left-hander made his Major League Debut last season, finishing with a 4.89 ERA, 1.293 WHIP, and a 10.2 K/9 in 38.2 innings across nine games (eight starts). Cantillo should be part of Cleveland's pitching staff at some point in 2025, but Opening Day does not seem particularly likely at this moment in time.
