Like all teams in spring training, the Cleveland Guardians are currently evaluating players on the roster bubble, as their performance in Arizona may very well determine whether or not they make the Opening Day roster. Sometimes, these decisions can be hard to make, but these four players are making the Guardians' choice an easy one.
Playing his way off of the Cleveland Guardians' Opening Day roster: Juan Brito
A candidate for the starting second base job that became vacant following Andres Gimenez being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, Juan Brito had a real chance of making Cleveland's Opening Day roster. Those chances appear to have dropped significantly, especially with how he performed on the plate in Arizona.
Brito has two hits in 24 at-bats, both being home runs, with seven strikeouts and two walks. The sample size is still small, being just 10 games, but getting on base just four times in 26 plate appearances is just not good enough. A certain level of offense is going to be expected from whoever wins the starting second base job, and what Brito has done so far does not represent anything remotely close to being the offensive upgrade over Gimenez the Guardians are looking for.
The 23-year-old still has plenty of potential and could make his MLB Debut at some point this season, but unless a complete 180 degree turnaround happens almost immediately, that career milestone may not be happening on Opening Day.
